Nijel Welcomed As A Hero

Gaborone: The Hon. Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Hon. Thapelo Olopeng with other stakeholders was at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport this morning to welcome one of Botswana’s finest athletes, Nijel Amos. Nijel is currently leading the Diamond League and has already qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

A motorcade from the airport led to the National Stadium where the Hon. Minister welcomed Nijel and recognised Isaac Makwala who is currently in Europe training for the IAAF World Championships. Makwala is the current 400m African record holder, also he is the fifth fastest non-American 400m runner of all time. Makwala has also qualified for Rio Games. The Hon. Minister promised that the Government and Batswana would continue to support and rally behind the athletes.

His Excellency Seretse Khama Ian Khama the President of the Republic of Botswana, made a surprise showing at the event.

In his address, Nijel reiterated that he carries the hopes and dreams of Batswana on his shoulders every time gets into the track field. He called for support from authorities as their careers are short lived. He urged Batswana not to lose hope on them when they don’t perform well as that is part of the game. “There are good races and bad races” he enthused. He pledged that they will deliver at the IAAF World Championships.

Zeus, Izzy and Scar performed a special song in honour of Nigel.
