Press Release: Letlhakane Host Olympic Day Celebrations

Letlhakane village in the Boteti Sub-District will on 29th August, 2015 host the Olympic Day Celebration at the main kgotla. The Olympic Day is a tradition that is celebrated annually, world-wide to commemorate the founding of the Olympic movement. The movement was founded by Baron Pierre De Coubertin on 23rd June, 1894 at the Sorbonne University in Paris, initiating celebrations worldwide. The event has been an Olympic norm since 1987. Botswana has actively participated in the Olympic Day Celebration since 1997 and last year the event was held in Masunga.

The commemoration is held under the theme “Move, Learn and Discover.” Encouraging people from all walks of life regardless of age, gender and athletic ability to participate in some form of sport in the spirit of Olympism. The event is traditionally celebrated in honour of sport for overall health of the body, mind and soul.

Schools in the area and the community are expected to participate in the day festivities that include a 10km run and football matches.
